Patient Privacy & Sti Testing: How To Keep Testing Private When You Are On A Family Member’s Insurance
If you get tested for STIs at UHS, your insurance provider may send an Explanation of Benefits or Summary of Payment to the insured persons address. The EOB may list the date of the visit, the cost of the visit, the health care provider or visit location, and the type of service or visit.
If you have the Student Health Benefit Plan , services are 100% covered, and no EOB will be sent.
If you are covered under a family members Massachusetts-based health insurance plan, the PATCH Act allows you to choose how and where your health insurance company sends your EOB. Heres how:
If you are covered by a family members non-Massachusetts-based health insurance plan, an EOB may be sent to your family member. To prevent this from happening, you have 2 options:
- You may be able to have billing information sent directly to you instead of to your family member. To find out if this is possible, you MUST call your insurance company. This is NOT automatic and wont happen unless you call your insurance company and ask for it.
- You can opt to pay the bill for STI testing entirely out of pocket at the time of your visit. If you do this, your insurance provider would not be involved, and no documents would be sent to your family member.Current self-pay testing charges are listed above.

The choice of going to a doctor, visiting a free clinic, or even doing a test with a kit depends on a few factors. These are:
- Do you have a regular doctor or physician youre comfortable seeing?

Does Health Insurance Cover Std Testing
Yes, most of the time. Testing for certain STDs like HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea is one of the preventive health benefits that most plans must cover under the ACA. But whether your plan covers a specific STD test can depend on a lot of different things, including your age, gender, risk factors, and if youre pregnant.
Under the ACA, all insurance plans must cover HIV testing for everyone ages 15 to 65, as well as other ages if you have a higher risk for getting HIV. What Is The Difference Between Preventive Screening And Diagnostic Testing
Coverage for STD testing may depend on whether the test is considered preventive or diagnostic.
Asymptomatic STD screening is considered a preventive care service. A screening is a basic test given to a patient who does not show any symptoms of the condition in question. When a person does have symptoms, the pictures changes, as the chance of uncovering something greatly increases. Contact your insurance provider to find out which tests they cover or look on their website for a list of preventive care services.
Preventive care is separate from diagnosis and treatment, which will be billed separately. If you are experiencing symptoms your test is no longer considered preventive. Instead, it will be considered diagnostic,and will likely not be fully covered by insurance.

The Provider Is Not In

Doctor-ordered chlamydia, gonorrhea and HIV tests are covered by student fees. University students who are 24 or younger who do not have or cannot use insurance may qualify for a grant that covers some or all of the cost of most other STI testing at the health center. Why Should I Get Tested
The majority of STIs are asymptomatic, which means that there are no signs, but there are possible consequences, including:
- Blood vessel, heart, eye or brain damage

Note: A Pap test is not the same thing as an STI check. You will need to book an appointment with a doctor if you want just a Pap test, or if you want both a Pap and STI check.

What Is The Test For Hiv
An HIV test checks for HIV antibodies or antigens in the blood. If they are found, the test is considered positive.
Most doctors use a blood test, such as the ELISA. If the test is positive , another test, such as a PCR, may be done to be sure the test result is accurate.
Even if HIV antibodies or antigens arent found, you may need to be tested again, especially if you think you have been exposed. This is done to make sure that HIV antibodies or antigens dont appear at a later time. It can take about 3 months from the time you become infected with HIV for the antibodies or antigens to be found in your blood.
During this period, an infected person can still spread the infection even though his or her test was negative.
You can get HIV testing in most doctors offices, public health clinics, hospitals, and Planned Parenthood clinics. You can also buy a home HIV test kit in a drugstore or by mail order.
