Will My Insurance Rates Go Up If I File A Claim For Hail Damage

Albertans suffer hail damage to cars and property during storm season

One reason some homeowners are concerned and hesitant about filing an insurance claim for hail damage is because they believe that their rates will automatically go up. We get asked this question a lot.

But instead of asking your roofer this question, you know who is better-equipped to answer it? Your insurance agent. Roofers are, honestly, pretty ignorant when it comes to insurance policies and in fact, in many states, including Colorado, roofers aren’t legally allowed to try to interpret your policy for you.

So to help answer this question for you, we’ve asked a local expert: Farmers Insurance agent, Craig England.

Can Your Insurance Rates Go Up After A Hail Claim?

Most likely, your rates will increase each year even if there hasn’t been a bad storm in your area. Remember that insurance is a cost-sharing business where your money insures other people around the country. When insurance companies have a large loss, they’re going to recoup that money and the way they do that is by increasing the rates of their clients.

But the big question is whether or not your rates will go up if you file a claim for hail damage? The simple answer to that question is, “Yes.” An insurance company can decide to raise the rates on homeowners after hail damage. Just remember, whether you file the claim or not, your premiums will most likely increase since the your insurance company sustained a large financial loss.

Have You Been Told That Hail Claims Won’t Affect Your Rates?

How Else Can You Protect Your Car Against Hail Damage

While comprehensive insurance can give you peace of mind in the event of a hailstorm, there are other ways to protect your vehicle. Avoiding the storm in the first place is the obvious answer, but it might be helpful to also:

  • Know the weather forecast. Hailstorms can come on quickly and unexpectedly, but you can protect your car by planning in advance. If hailstorms are predicted, try rescheduling your car journey to avoid damage. If a severe weather event is expected, some insurers will alert their customers ahead of time so that they can seek shelter for their cars or make alternative arrangements.
  • Seek shelter and find safety. If in danger, find a place where its safe to pull over, ideally a covered area. However, avoid parking under trees or in areas prone to flooding in extreme weather this could damage your car in other ways. Instead, opt for garages, car parks or secure shelters. Never speed to try and beat a storm or park somewhere that can cause you or others harm.
  • Purchase a hail protector tarp. Protective hail tarps offer extra padding and protection and may be an option.

Can You Claim Hail Damage Twice

Yes. But there are some things to keep in mind before you make this decision. You can file as many claims as you need, but the more claims that are filed means the higher your premiums will be. One claim won’t typically affect your rates but two claims in a row may cause an increase in your premium.

How To Make A Hail Damage Insurance Claim

Does insurance cover your car if its damaged by hail?

The dwelling coverage portion of your homeowners insurance covers your home, including the roof, and anything else damaged by hail. Heres an example of how a hail damage claim for your roof would go, depending on the type of insurance policy you have.

A replacement cost policy pays to replace your roof based on current construction costs. An actual cash value policy decreases your payment based on the age of your roof. Heres an example: Lets say it costs $30,000 to replace your 10-year-old roof after hail damage, and your home policy has a $3,000 deductible. A policy with replacement cost will pay $27,000. A policy with actual cash value coverage will subtract the depreciation in value for the age of your roof. If the value of your roof depreciated by half after 10 years, the policy would pay $12,000.

If you have replacement cost, typically you receive two payments from your insurance provider. The first is for the actual cash value of the roof. Then, after the roof is replaced, the company will pay the rest. Your deductible will be subtracted from the total payout.

To file a claim, do the following:

Document the damage. Take photographs and if possible measure or estimate the size of the hail.

Submit your claim. Contact your insurer and have your policy number and an explanation of the damage. Your insurance agent will discuss your current policy, whats covered and your next steps.

Can My Vehicle Be Written Off By Hail Damage

If the hail damage to your vehicle is bad enough, your insurance company may declare the vehicle a total loss and write off your vehicle. If you have comprehensive coverage and your insurer determines the cost of the repairs exceeds the value of your vehicle, your insurer will pay you the value of your vehicle at the present time so it can be replaced.

As an example, if your vehicle is going to need $6000 in repairs from hail damage, and the present market value of the vehicle is only $5000, your insurer may choose to compensate you for the value of the vehicle so you can replace it.

Which States Have The Most Hail Storms

Certain parts of the country are more prone to hail storms, so you should be prepared if hail is a common occurrence in your area. If you are getting car insurance in Texas, Wyoming, Nebraska or other states in the Midwest, hail storms are more likely to damage your car, so you should purchase comprehensive insurance. The map below shows the number of hail incidents per county.

Being left to pay out of pocket can end up costing you a lot more than paying for comprehensive insurance. For example, between 1950 and 2011, there was more than $3 billion worth of property damage due to hail in the state of Texas alone.

Wind And Hail Exclusions

Similar to the wind/hail deductible as a mechanism for lowering rates, insurers may also give you the option of excluding wind and hail damage altogether in exchange for lower insurance premiums. Just keep in mind that you could be left having to pay for everything out of pocket in the event of a severe wind or hailstorm. Unless you have a rainy day fund that can cover a full rebuild of your home and then some, the wind and hail exclusion probably isnt your best option.

Does Hail Damage Raise Car Insurance Rates

Hail damage is covered under comprehensive coverage: 2 Wants to Know

No, It will not. According to the legislation in your state and the rating system used by your insurer, comprehensive claims of this kind normally have no impact on your premiums. Natural disaster claims are normally not made against you since they are unpredictable and beyond your control.

Remember that the quantity of claims filed against your coverage might impact your rates even though your rates cannot be increased as a result of a hail claim. If youve lately filed more car insurance hail damage claims, your overall claim history may make you appear to be a greater risk. As a result, youll pay extra.

When It Comes To Your Roof Age Matters At Claim Time

Wind and hail storms have been increasing in frequency over the past several years. As a result, some insurance companies have begun offering to cover roofs for Actual Cash Value rather than Replacement Cost Value . What might seem as an attractive, lower premium offering at first sometimes catches homeowners off guard and without sufficient financial resources to pay for roof repairs after a loss occurs.

If you live in an area where roof damage from windstorms and hail is prevalent or possible, the decision you make about this coverage could mean the difference between paying out just your homeowners policy deductible or your deductible plus depreciation costs. This difference could amount to thousands of dollars depending on the age of your roof.

As with any other covered property in your homeowners policy, your roof is subject to either ACV or RCV when you suffer a covered cause of loss. If your policy is for ACV, your insurance company will pay the actual cash value of your roof at the time of a covered loss. This means the actual cash value minus your deductible amount minus the depreciation cost according to the age of your roof. Generally, the older your roof, the higher the amount depreciatedor not covered under your policy.

Cost of Smiths roof ten years ago: $15,000 Cost of Does roof ten years ago: $15,000

How To File A Hail Damage Roof Insurance Claim

  • To ensure appropriate reimbursement in a timely manner, the smart policyholder needs to be organized by gathering photographs of all damage, all estimates, receipts, correspondence and other documents related to the claim.

  • To file a home insurance roof claim, you can call, go online or use your carrier’s smartphone app. The information you provide will be incorporated into a “loss notice,” which is the document that starts the claims process. You will be asked to submit documents and photos related to the damage.

  • Next, your home insurer will dispatch an insurance adjuster to investigate the legitimacy and accuracy of your claim and whether your policy covers the loss and, if so, for how much. If your claim is successful, you will receive two checks: The first check will be a down payment on the full settlement. Later, you will receive a second check for the balance of the claim.

  • If indirect damage later results from the same hail event that prompted the initial claim, you can file for an additional amount on the same claim, according to the Insurance Information Institute . That’s good news, because if you had to file another, separate claim to pay for the additional damage, you would have to pay another deductible.

  • Policy Exclusions For Cosmetic Roof Damage

    20

As weather patterns continue to change and severe wind and hailstorms become more common and expensive in different parts of the country, insurance companies have had to find creative ways to limit their losses. Cosmetic damage exclusions are one solution to this problem.

If your policy has this exclusion, damage that only affects the appearance but not the function of your roof, siding, windows, doors, or any other part of the dwelling may not be covered. Be sure to check with your insurer to see if cosmetic structural damage is covered.

Comprehensive Coverage For Hail And Wind Storm Vehicle Damage

In order for your vehicle to be covered for hail or wind storm damage, you must have comprehensive coverage that includes these types of damages. Some insurance providers also require a declaration for storm damage on your vehicle. It is always important to read the fine print contained in your auto insurance policy, if in doubt ask your insurance provider for clarification.

How Can I Protect My Vehicle Against A Hail Storm

There are several ways that you can reduce or eliminate the risk of your vehicle getting damaged during a hailstorm. In many regions, a severe hailstorm is an uncommon occurrence and because of this, you will often find that owners aren’t prepared for the occurrence of a storm. If you get caught in a hail storm when you are driving, you should try and find cover as soon as it is safe to do so.

If you are traveling down a busy road this may prove challenging, however, parking under some sort of cover like a tree can help to protect your car against damage. If there isn’t anywhere near to shelter, you should try and pull over and leave your vehicle in a stationary position as it will sustain less damage this way.If you live in a location that experiences frequent hailstorms it may be worth investing in a special car-specific cover that can protect it from any damage caused by hailstones. Of course, the cover should be made from a thick and durable material, otherwise, it isn’t going to prove very effective.

If you don’t have a car-specific hail storm cover, you may use blankets. Of course. they will need to be taped down otherwise they are likely to blow away when the bad weather hits.

Will Auto Insurance Cover My Windshield If Its Damaged By Hail

Yes, if you have comprehensive coverage. In some cases, your insurance company may waive the deductible for glass repair. Its common for insurers to waive the deductible if the windshield is being repaired instead of replaced.

In some states, you can buy full glass coverage separately from your comprehensive, which would cover a hail-damaged windshield. This guide to windshield coverage explains glass repair coverage by state.

Is Hail Damage Covered By Homeowners Insurance

Should you make an insurance claim on the hail damage to your car or roof?
  • Hail Damage Roof Insurance Claims
  • A standard homeowners insurance policy covers claims for hail damage that directly or indirectly compromises your home’s structure. It won’t cover cosmetic damage and non-structural hail claims.

Homeowners insurance covers claims for hail damage that compromises your home’s structure.

Your roof, for example, is the backbone of your home’s structure. Missing or damaged shingles, a damaged chimney, compromised vents, punctures and any gaps between the roof and the roofline will invite the elements to seep in, causing leaks and water damage, rotting wood, ruining insulation, potentially sabotaging major systems and, finally, jeopardizing your home’s overall structural integrity.

Keep in mind that your home insurance may not honor or will only partially honor a hail-related claim if a home’s roof or siding was sorely neglected and already in poor condition before the hail event.

How To Deal With An Insurance Adjuster For Hail Damage Claims

An insurance adjuster may offer you a one-time, lump-sum payment, but you are not under any obligation to accept the offer.

If you dispute the adjuster’s assessment of the cause or extent of the damage, you can hire a public adjuster to inspect the damage and give an independent report. A public adjuster advocates for your interests, not the insurance company’s.

Is Hail Damage Worth The Claim

How can you decide if the hail damage on your roof is worth filing a claim over? You’re going to need a few pieces of information.

Start by learning about your deductible. How much will you need to pay out of pocket before your insurance kicks in?

Let’s say your deductible is $600 and you have $1,000 worth of hail damage to pay for. In this case, you’re only getting $400 of coverage, and it isn’t worth it. If, however, you have $4,000 worth of hail damage and don’t have that kind of money saved up, you may want to file the claim.

Next, check your records to ensure that you haven’t filed another claim in the past three years. If you have, find out how much your monthly premiums will increase after filing a second claim. Avoid raising your monthly premium unless the cost of hail damage on your roof is extravagant.

If you live in a condo, a co-op or townhouse, your homeowners association’s policy should cover the detrimental effects of a hail event however, if the damage is extreme, your homeowner’s association may levy a special fee to cover extensive emergency repairs that your HOA won’t cover. However, condo, co-op and townhouse owners can mitigate this risk by purchasing “loss assessment” insurance coverage, which protects against a high fee.
