Costa Rica Travel Insurance Tips Recapped
Plans can abruptly change no matter when you travel, which can mean that travel insurance is a good idea. This can be especially true for Costa Rica if youre looking at an adventurous vacation rather than suntanning at a resort. If this is the case, be sure to check out a variety of insurance providers to be sure that theyve got you covered, no matter your needs.
Booking travel with a credit card that provides complimentary travel insurance can be a smart money move. This way, youll have your bases covered without needing to lift a finger.
Medical Emergency Insurance And Emergency Medical Evacuation
Costa Rica is a developing country, with a large percentage of the population living in poverty. This means that when visiting more rural parts of the country, you may not have immediate access to the quality and level of medical care that youre accustomed to as a resident of the United States. While your health insurance may cover care at a local hospital in an emergency, some situations might require you to travel long distances to receive appropriate care.
Emergency medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation coverage can help you cover the costs of local medical care and evacuation if you must be transported out of Costa Rica to receive appropriate care. If youre living with a severe, long-term medical condition, you may want to purchase this coverage to complement your health insurance policy.
How Far In Advance Should I Purchase My Travel Insurance
You should receive your certificate of insurance within hours after purchasing the policy online. Most companies will send it by email within 24 hours.
Still, we would recommend getting the insurance at least four days or so before your trip. You can fill out the online Health Pass starting 72 hours before your flight. That will give you an additional two days in case you encounter any problems.

Costa Rica Travel Insurance Requirements
When you travel outside the U.S. its important to know that your domestic health insurance plan may provide no or very limited coverage. Unexpected illness or injury is always a possibility when you travel, so its smart to purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy with a suite of benefits, including travel medical insurance.
Effective Aug. 1, 2021, the Costa Rican government will require inbound unvaccinated tourists to have:
- $50,000 in coverage for medical expenses, including Covid
- $2,000 in coverage for quarantine lodging expenses due to Covid while in Costa Rica
The $2,000 would cover extra lodging expenses if you test positive for Covid or have an exposure that requires you to quarantine and prevents you from returning home as scheduled, says Moncrief. Costa Rica is the only country with this specific requirement.
Tourists under under age 18 and fully vaccinated travelers are not required to carry this insurance for a Costa Rica trip.
Costa Rica also requires all visitors, regardless of age or vaccination status, to fill out a Health Pass at least 72 hours before arriving. Vaccinated tourists need to attach a copy of their vaccination certificate to the Health Pass.
Six travel insurance providers on Squaremouth have created new policies to meet the Costa Rica requirement.

Consider Medical Evacuation Coverage For Costa Rica
In a worst-case medical scenario you might need to travel for care. For example, if you end up in a location in Costa Rica thats two hours from a major medical center and you develop an allergic reaction to an insect bite, medical evacuation insurance could literally save your life.
This coverage in a travel insurance plan will transport you to the nearest facility that can treat your condition. Without this type of coverage, it could cost you thousands in out-of-pocket expenses to get to an adequate facility.
Rainy Season In Costa Rica
Costa Rica rainy season can get extremely intense being a tropical country. If youre visiting the months of September and October, for most of the country it rains very hard. It is common for some parts of Costa Rica to flood.
In 2016, Hurricane Otto crashed through the north of Costa Rica, even killing people and destroying roads and homes. In 2017, Tropical Storm Nate hit Guanacaste hard. Many people had to cancel all their travel plans or they got stuck. Trees fell on houses and cars, roads were closed, etc. Roads are more slippery in rainy season and accidents are more prone to occur during this time of year.

Is travel insurance required for visiting Costa Rica? Not currentlybut its still a really good idea to buy it. Heres why.
- Emergency medical and emergency transportation benefits are crucial. Most healthcare providers overseas only accept cash payments, and the U.S. Department of State strongly recommends supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation in Costa Rica.2
- Travel insurance can protect your trip investment. Have to cancel your trip at the last minute, or cut it short? Trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits can reimburse your nonrefundable trip costs when you cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason.

The Costa Rican Ministry of Health will issue a quarantine order to anyone receiving a positive COVID-19 testand this order cant be appealed.3 Individually ordered quarantine due to COVID-19 is a covered reason for trip interruption in the Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, now included in most of our travel insurance plans.

Travel Insurance For Costa Rica
A lot of people may think that travel insurance is unnecessary, but it actually provides a great deal of coverage and security for a variety of troubling situations that can arise before and during your trip.
For example, purchasing travel insurance for your vacation can provide a means of reimbursement if you have to cancel your holiday last minute for a covered reason. Additionally, many travel insurance providers offer concierge and support services while youre abroad to help you organize your accommodations, deal with delays or cancellations, or recover your lost passport and stolen items.
These concierge services provide a sense of security when you encounter these stressful situations, and theyre especially helpful if youre traveling alone and dont have anyone to call or lean on when something goes wrong.
And most importantly, a lot of travel insurance policies will cover you if you need emergency medical attention while youre abroad. If youll be participating in a lot of active excursions while youre in Costa Rica, its in your best interest to get travel insurance that includes medical coverage.
Do I Need Insurance for My Vacation?
You may have medical insurance in your home country, but note that many insurance providers dont offer coverage in foreign countries, so youll likely need to purchase a separate policy.
How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost for Costa Rica?
Buy Insurance Last Minute But Not Last Second
Especially if your trip is a couple of months away we recommend waiting to purchase your insurance a week or less before arrival for two reasons.
First, prices have only gone down.
Initially only the official Costa Rican policies were accepted and prices were outrageous almost a thousand dollars for a retired couple visiting for two weeks. Later in November when international insurance policies were permitted the prices plummeted to around $10 per day. By December companies began to see that there were very few claims and the premiums charged were almost pure profit so competition heated up and now some are charging as little as $0.50 a day.
The second reason to hold off on purchasing insurance is that the rules will probably change. As vaccines become widely available by the middle of 2021 it may become more important to be inoculated than insured.
