How Are Abortions Paid For

Under the Hyde Amendment, states are allowed to pass their own laws to determine how they want to allocate funds for health insurance services. Due to this ruling, many states’ health insurance policies, including Medicaid and ACA plans, do not offer elective abortion services. However, in some cases, an abortion would be covered if the pregnancy endangers the health of the mother or is due to rape or incest.

People Struggle With The Cost Of Birth Control

This is not just a health issue, its an economic issue. The cost of birth control, with or without insurance, can take a toll on a persons bank account.

  • This isnt surprising considering co-pays for birth control pills typically range between $15 and $50 per month. That adds up to over $600 per year. Other methods, such as IUDs, can cost several hundred dollars, even with health insurance.

How Expensive Is An Abortion

How To Tell Someone You Have An STD | Planned Parenthood Video

The cost of an abortion will vary greatly depending on the type of abortion that you receive, which is based on how far along you are in your pregnancy. And though you can get an abortion without health insurance, it will cost significantly more money.

The most common form of abortion is a medical abortion, which terminates a pregnancy through the use of oral medication. Sometimes called the abortion pill, it can cost anywhere from $300 to $700 without insurance, depending on where you receive care. However, this form of abortion is only effective during the first 10 weeks of your pregnancy.

After the initial 10 weeks, you would need to have a surgical abortion, which can be slightly more expensive. Typically, a surgical abortion can cost anywhere between $800 and over $3,000 for later pregnancies without health insurance.

What Does It Actually Mean To Defund Planned Parenthood At The Federal Level

In practice, defunding Planned Parenthood takes money away from its mostly low-income patients, who might be forced to seek care elsewhere if the government stopped subsidizing their visits to Planned Parenthood. Low-income women will be hit especially hard, but all Planned Parenthood patients may be affected if clinics are forced to close as a result of budget cuts.

The more than $500 million Planned Parenthood receives annually from the federal government the funding that Republicans in Congress now want to take away pays for specifichealth services, like birth control or cervical cancer screening, for people who couldnt afford them otherwise.

Most of the funds are actually reimbursements from Medicaid, the USs public health insurance program for the poor. Just like with any other insurance, Medicaid patients go to their health care appointment first and then have Medicaid pay all or most of the bill later.

The rest of Planned Parenthoods federal funds come in the form of grants from Title X, the nations only federal program for family planning. Title X grants are awarded on a competitive basis to clinics that meet the programs standards for family planning coverage and services.

Title X subsidizes free or low-cost contraception and other preventive services, and its especially helpful for low-income or uninsured people who make too much to qualify for Medicaid.

How Is Planned Parenthood Funded

Does Planned Parenthood Take Kaiser Insurance

Planned Parenthoodâs funding comes from a variety of sources such as grants, health services, and government reimbursements , revenue from non-governmental health services , and miscellaneous sources .

The above percentages come from the 2018-2019 yearly report published by Planned Parenthood. Tax money, by law, doesnât fund abortions. However, that money is fungible. This means that when an entity has a large sum of money, it can move funds around to pay for whatever it requires.

Planned Parenthood receives around $60 million annually, enabling it to spread the money to whatever program it wants.

Obamacare Key To Planned Parenthood Expansion

After working and spending a great deal to get Obama elected, Planned Parenthood was one of the privileged groups invited to the Presidents health care summit at the White House early in Obamas first term in March of 2009. Though it was unknown what final shape the healthcare plan would take at the time, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards offered her organization as a model of what the Planned Parenthood website termed a safety-net health care provider and entry point into the health care system for millions of men and women.

Planned Parenthood fought for and defended the health plan, pushing to get it passed in March of 2010, and then helping to keep in office the politicians needed to keep it from being modified in any significant way that would threaten either the plan or their abortion empire. Obama and his Senate allies responded in kind, defending and promoting the abortion giant and making federal funding of Planned Parenthood the one non-negotiable in high stakes budget talks.

It has been a very profitable relationship for Planned Parenthood.

Today, as ObamaCare begins it rollout, Planned Parenthood stands poised to bring in hordes of new customers, rake in even more money, and further expand its already massive abortion empire.

Many Health Centers Offer Family Planning Services But The Range And Volume Of Services They Provide Varies

How To Talk About STD Testing & Screening | Planned Parenthood Video

Under Section 330 of the PHSA, the Health Resources and Services Administration provides grants to health centers whose main focus is providing primary and preventive care to underserved and vulnerable populations. These clinics, called Federally Qualified Health Centers , are required to provide voluntary family planning services along with a wide range of health care services. Although it is not specifically defined in FQHC guidelines, voluntary family planning services can include preconception care, screening and treatment of STIs, and contraception. A survey of FQHCs found that virtually all reported they provided at least one method of contraception at one or more of their clinical sites.

However, research has documented differences between clinic types in their ability to offer direct access to the most effective contraceptive methods . For example, about eight in ten Planned Parenthood clinics and three-quarters of health department clinics can provide initial supply and refills of oral contraceptives on site, compared to one-third of FQHCs. Similarly, there are differences in capacity for family planning care within the FQHC network. In a 2017 Kaiser Family Foundation/ George Washington University study of FQHCs, 80-90% of centers that received Title X funds reported they provide LARCs, compared to just about half of FQHCs that did not receive Title X support .

What About Leaving My State For An Abortion

If you have abortion coverage, you may need to go “out of network” on your health insurance plan to see a doctor in another state, experts say.

Out-of-network coverage is typically less robust, and some health plans, including HMO plans, don’t offer it at all. Abramowitz suggests calling your insurance plan and asking whether you have out-of-network benefits and how they work.

In some cases, people may find it’s cheaper to pay a provider out of pocket than to go through their out-of-network insurance option, Abramowitz said. Many abortion providers work on a sliding scale, she added.

It’s also worth asking your insurance plan if there are any in-network abortion providers in another state. There could be one right over the state line, for example, Abramowitz said.

You also may be able to see a provider in another state virtually through a telehealth visit to get a medication abortion. In these cases, your medication can be mailed to you or you’ll be asked to pick it up somewhere.

However, 19 states have already made it illegal to receive medication prescribed during a telehealth visit.

How Can I Get On The Pill Without Telling My Parents

I want to start using birth control but I don’t want to tell my parents I’m having sex. Where/how can I get it without them finding out? Bethany*

It can be hard for teens to talk to their parents about being sexually active. But surprisingly, many parents are open to discussing sex and birth control, especially if you show them that you want to act responsibly.

But if you feel like you can’t talk to your parents, you can still look into birth control options and get sexual-health care. Make an appointment with your general doctor or . Or you can go to your local Planned Parenthood . Don’t be afraid to discuss birth control or sex with your doctor. Thanks to doctorpatient confidentiality, your doc can’t talk to your parents about these topics without your permission.

The Pill is covered by most health insurance, but if you are on your parents’ plan, they may know if insurance pays for it. If you want to pay for the Pill yourself, it’s about $15 to $50 a month, depending on the type.

If you do go on the Pill, you still need to make sure your partner always wears a condom to protect against STDs. Many Planned Parenthoods and student centers have condoms for either next-to-nothing or free.

If you’ve already had sex, make sure to be tested for STDs. STDs don’t always cause symptoms, so people can be infected without even knowing it.
