Whole life for children: The Gerber Life Grow-Up Plan is a whole life insurance policy for children with coverage options of $5,000 to $50,000. Parents, grandparents and legal guardians can apply when children are between 14 days and 14 years old. The coverage amount doubles at age 18, and the child becomes the policy owner at age 21. Gerber also offers a whole life policy for teens. Parents or grandparents can purchase this for teens ages 15 to 17.

Endowment life insurance: The Gerber Life College Plan is pitched as a college savings plan that doubles as adult life insurance. The product is an endowment life insurance policy, which pays out a lump sum on a certain date or when the insured dies, whichever comes sooner. Typically a policy would insure a parent, and the maturity date would be timed to coincide with a childs high school graduation. Coverage options range from $10,000 to $150,000. The rate of return varies depending on the policy. Returns are taxable income.
Term life: Terms of 10, 20 or 30 years are available for $100,000 to $300,000 of term life insurance coverage for adults. Most people will not have to take a medical exam and many will get a decision on the application in minutes. An exam is required for ages 51 and older who apply for more than $100,000 of coverage.

Term Life Insurance Options

I prefer term life insurance over whole life insurance. After all, the purpose of life insurance is to cover your family in the event of an untimely event.
A smart financial goal while you carry a term life insurance policy would be to save, invest, and pay off debt, working to become self-insured. When someone is self-insured, theyre in a solid enough financial situation that they dont need payouts from life insurance companies.
In other words, their debt is low enough and their savings high enough that their family will be financially secure if something should happen to them.
But youll likely want to consider term life insurance in the interim until you become self-insured. Here are two companies with high A.M. Best ratings that you might want to check out.

Hard to Predict Childrens Financial Needs
Of course, its not always easy to know a childs future financial needs, so its not always clear what policy to take advantage of.
Coverage for Children Limited to $50,000
Limiting coverage to $50,000 may be restrictive given the expenses that todays young people face.
Premiums Increase Due to Health Conditions
Gerbers policies generally favor younger, healthy applicants. Health conditions can increase policy premiums, and accelerated underwriting can likewise result in a higher premium.

Life Insurance And The Non
The spouse who is non-paying should also have a life insurance policy in cases of child support. While there is no law for this, its practical. If either parent were to pass away unexpectedly the other would have to raise the children alone. It makes sense that each parent would want the living parent to be able to afford to raise his or her children.
Your Life Insurance Basics

Life insurance serves a really important purpose when you have a family: it protects the ones you love if something happens to you. Your presence in your familys life can never be replaced, but the contributions you make, financial and otherwise, can be insured to make sure that your family would be taken care of in the event of your death.
Understanding that, there are a few questions you need to ask yourself to determine the policy that would work best for your family. You can also learn more by looking at Gerber Life as an example. Gerber Life has been protecting families since 1967, and the Gerber Life Term Life Plan offers term life insurance with affordable rates and guaranteed benefits. The type of term life insurance policy youll want depends on your answer to these questions.
How much income would you want to replace?
The policy you choose should reflect the income lost if you suddenly werent there to provide support. If youre a stay-at-home parent, its important to remember that your household contribution is still valuable financially and is estimated at $40,000 a year. Many things factor into your life insurance policy, but income or household contribution will likely make up the majority.
Do you want to start a college fund?
Depending on the future you envision for your baby, you might want to consider including money for college when calculating how much coverage you need in a policy.

Gerber Life Insurance Customer And Claims Satisfaction
Gerber Life has an A financial stability rating with AM Best, showing the life insurer has historically paid out claims and satisfied its financial obligations. The company also has a lower-than-average National Association of Insurance Commissioners index. This rating index compared life insurers and competitors performance. With an average index of 1.00, Gerber Lifes index of 0.40 shows it has much fewer complaints than other life insurers.
Build Cash Value Over Time
For each monthly premium payment you make after the initial policy years, Gerber Life automatically sets a little bit aside. Over time, this amount grows into the policys cash value a small but helpful amount that you could borrow against should a need arise. The cumulative amount represents how much the policy would be worth at a given point in time were you to cash in the policy or take a loan against the policy.
As the cash value increases, more money from your policy can become available to borrow against**, perhaps to help pay for car repairs, prescription drugs, family emergencies or anything else that might come up.
The cash value of your policy can serve like a financial cushion for today, while the payout to your family can become a safety net or cushion for them.
A thoughtful gift for the people you love most

Selecting The Amount Of Life Insurance Youll Need
How much life insurance youll need will depend on the support payments you are required by law to make. What you decide to purchase is typically a matter of negotiation between you and your spouse. Family law lawyers have a life insurance calculator so that they can figure out how much youll pay in support so you can get the right amount of insurance to cover the responsibility even after your death. If there is a serious dispute between you and your spouse, it might be better to retain an actuary to calculate the actual amount needed.
Gerber Life Customer Reviews & Complaints

The Gerber Life Insurance Companys NAIC complaint ratio is 0.68, meaning they receive a proportionately low number of negative reviews compared to the amount of business they write. Also, many policyholders give Gerber Life glowing reviews for enrollment, praising how simple it is to sign up for a policy and to qualify for coverage.
However, the company does have some negative reviews. These are primarily focused on difficulties that some customers experienced in receiving payment from Gerber Life which makes it not one of the best life insurance companies in the industry. Customers complain of problems receiving money from Gerber, whether in trying to surrender a policy, take out a policy loan or file a claim after the death of a family member.
Gerber Life also has a number of negative reviews for its marketing communications. In some cases, customers thought they were increasing their coverage but were in fact purchasing an entirely new policy.
Other reviewers were confused between Gerbers Grow-Up Plan and College Plan, since the company has featured the Grow-Up Plans cash value as a way to help pay for college. If youre considering coverage from Gerber Life, or any insurer, make sure that you clearly understand exactly what youre paying for. The costs of cancelling coverage, and the associated challenges, make it worth the time to double-check these details.
