Insurance That Covers Dental Implants

Cost Of Implants With Dental Insurance

How to Find Out if Dental Insurance Covers Implants

The cost for a dental implant with insurance depends on how much your plan pays for coverage, your deductible and maximum coverage limits.

Lets say youve already exceeded your annual deductible and you need a dental implant procedure that isnt major. It costs $3,000. Say your plan pays at 50% for dental implants and has a $2,000 annual coverage maximum. In that case, the plan would pay up to $1,500 for any dental coverage and you would pay for the remaining $1,500.

Dr. Jaclyn Tomsic, a Cleveland-based oral and maxillofacial surgeon who specializes in implants, warns about additional costs that go beyond the surgical fee to place the implant, including the dentists fee for the crown and its replacement.

Tomsic says it may make sense to spread dental implant work over two calendar years if your plan has annual coverage maximums.

If only a single implant is needed, it may be beneficial to plan for implant surgery in the last half of the plans year and a crown in the first half of the next plan year so that the insurer will cover a portion of both the implant surgery and the crown, Tomsic says.

Talk to the dentist and oral surgeon about what work will be involved.

Terms And Conditions Like Waiting Periods Often Reduce Your Coverage

Be aware that the terms and conditions of the plan can limit coverage for dental implants. For example, plans often require a waiting period before any coverage for implants is made available. These waiting periods are often 6-12 months, though they can be longer.

The annual maximum is commonly not available until after a waiting period of 12-32 months. In fact, it may never be available for dental implants, even after a waiting period. Often only a percentage of the maximum is available.

For example, at the time of writing this blog , UnitedHealthcare offers an insurance plan that includes coverage for dental implants. Its called the Premier Plus Plan. According to the digital flyer outlining the plan, it offers a maximum annual coverage of $2,000. However, only 40% of this maximum is available for dental implants after the first year. Only 50% is available after year 2.

The yearly maximum may also assume multiple procedures. In this scenario, your yearly maximum wouldnt be fully available unless you had multiple procedures within the same year. So if you had one dental implant procedure, only a portion of your yearly maximum would go towards the cost of that treatment.

Another factor to consider is pre-existing conditions. For instance, if a tooth was missing before you purchased your plan and you decide later that you want a dental implant to replace that tooth, that pre-existing condition may negate your coverage for that procedure.

What Are Dental Implants Everything You Should Know

People can lose teeth for various reasons, including infection, decay, trauma, and fractures. One solution to replace a missing tooth or several missing teeth is with dental implants.

While dental implants are a high-quality and long-lasting solution, they can also be a financial burden. For instance, the average cost of a single implant is around $2,440, while a full or partial set of implants can range anywhere from $20,000 to $45,000. Whats also challenging is that the dental implant procedure is often considered cosmetic, meaning many dental insurance carriers wont cover it.

However, dental implants can be more affordable when you join a dental savings plan, an affordable alternative to dental insurance. Keep reading to learn more about dental implants and how a dental savings plan can help mitigate the cost of this procedure.

What Is Dental Insurance For Implants

Will Insurance Pay For Dental Implants : Dental Implant Cost Boca Raton ...

Dental insurance for implants is important because many basic dental insurance policies dont cover major procedures or surgery to replace newly missing teeth. Since dental implants are expensive, having that extra coverage for a percentage of the cost can help make dental implants considerably more affordable.

There are two main types of dental implants. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, endosteal implants are placed in the jawbone, and subperiosteal implants are placed under the gum but above the jawbone.

Endosteal implants often are preferred, but subperiosteal implants make more sense for patients who dont have enough healthy jawbone and dont want to endure another procedure to improve their jawbone strength for endosteal implants.

When Does Medicaid Cover Dental Implants

Medicaid can cover the entire dental implant process when it acts as health insurance. The program would pay for all dental procedures to preserve jaw bone structure if the problem originated elsewhere in the body. That means that your missing tooth or teeth must result from other medical conditions like diabetes or osteoporosis.

Youll need detailed paperwork explaining why implants are the only viable option for Medicaid to pay for dental implants. Your doctor and dentist must also send a comprehensive treatment plan to Medicaid for special consideration. You may still be denied.

Medicaid recipients under 21 can have a part of their dental implants covered. They have a right to Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment . If they need the implants under EPSDT, they can have Medicaid pay for the dental procedures .

There are certain instances when Medicaid will cover tooth repair and other dental work, including some tooth implants when acting as dental coverage. What dental treatments Medicaid covers depends on the state you live in.

Many people also ask Does Medicaid cover braces? Like with dental implants, Medicaid will cover different types of braces only if they are deemed medically necessary. Byte would be a cheaper alternative if you just want to fix crooked teeth. Check out our if you are interested in aligning your teeth without braces.

How To Floss All

What Medical Insurance Covers Dental Implants

Dental flossing ALL-ON-4 dental implants enable you to insert the floss between the implants bridge permanent teeth at the gumline and pull it through to the other side. You can then lean it against the implant surface and rub out the food trap. You must be as diligent with removing plaque from around your implants as you would with natural teeth. The best means for doing this is to floss around each implant post between the bridgework and the gums as shown in our video here. This type of flossing is quite different than with natural teeth where you work the floss in between each tooth. With your bridgework, you need to thread the floss between it and the gums with the help of a floss threader, a small handheld device with a loop on one end and a stiff flat edge on the other.

You can also use other methods like specialized floss with stiffened ends for threading, oral irrigation, or Waterpik which emits a pressurized spray of water to loosen plaque, or an interproximal small brush that can reach into narrow spaces. If you choose an interproximal brush, however, be sure it’s not made with metal wire, which can scratch the implant and create microscopic crevices for plaque.

Use the method you and your dentist think best to keep your implants plaque-free. Following the instruction on the video here will help reduce your risk of a gum infection that could endanger your implant-supported bridgework.

Requirements & Leat Clause

There are two main requirements you should consider.

First is the missing tooth clause. This condition states that if the tooth was missing prior to the plan’s effective date, the policy will not pay for any treatment used to replace the missing tooth. This clause is not seen as often anymore, but it does still exist and you should check for it, especially if you have any missing teeth.

The second clause has to do with insurance downgrades and is called the LEAT clause. LEAT stands for Least Expensive Alternative Treatment. In regards to replacing missing teeth – whether by an implant or a dental bridge – the plan could downgrade the treatment to a partial denture in some cases.

For example, let’s say you’re missing #29, but you are also missing #20. Each of these teeth are on the lower arch – one on the left and one on the right. Instead of paying for an implant or bridge on each side, your insurance is going to downgrade to a partial denture since you could have replaced both of those teeth with the denture. This can be a little confusing, but it is common practice across all insurance companies.

Are Implants Covered By My Insurance

To determine whether your insurance covers implants, its important to understand the different parts of the treatment and how much mouth preparation is needed for the implant. The amount of coverage also depends on whether you are receiving a full restorative arch or just replacing one or two lost teeth.

Tooth Extraction: The need for this is dependant on whether you are already missing teeth or if the tooth is damaged and needs to be extracted before it is replaced. If the damaged tooth is still present, this procedure will be part of your dental implant treatment and it is covered by most insurance companies in full or at least in part.

Bone Grafting: Some patients need their underlying jawbone reinforced prior to the implant procedure to ensure the implant will be stable and secure. This part of the procedure may not be covered, despite it being a crucial step in the implant procedure.

Placing the Implant: The implant placement procedure is deemed a major dental procedure. Dont be afraid of the word major, though this is a term insurance companies use that relects cost more than the intensity of treatment. Some dental insurance plans cover up to 50 percent of major procedures.
