How Does Cash Value Work

Protect How You’re Remembered | Guaranteed Whole Life Insurance | Mutual of Omaha

All forms of permanent life insurance build cash value.

The cash value in a life policy is similar to a behind-the-scenes investment account.

Every time you make a payment, a small portion is credited to the cash value account.

In addition, it typically earns interest.

As time goes on, the monies in this account will continue to increase.

There are a few ways policyholders can utilize the cash value with these types of life insurance.

  • Withdraw the funds: You can take a loan from the cash value. You can use the money you withdraw in any way you desire. Please note that outstanding policy loans will reduce the death benefit payout. For example, lets assume you have a $50,000 death benefit and a $1,000 outstanding loan. If you died, only $49,000 would pay out.
  • Reduced paid-up: This nonforfeiture provision would transform your policy into a permanent paid-up policy with a lower death benefit. A paid-up policy does not require any further premium payments. How much of a death benefit it would be reduced to depends on the cash value total when you exercise this option. You need to call the carrier to ask them for the precise values.
  • Extended term insurance: This nonforfeiture provision provides temporary life insurance after the policys lapse point due to non-payment. How long the extended-term insurance lasts depends on the carrier and your cash value total when this provision is activated.

Also, some policies may not offer extended-term insurance.

How Are Life Insurance Rates Calculated

Life insurance rates are determined by five main factors:

  • Age: Each year that you delay buying a life insurance policy, the cost of premiums increases by 4.5% to 9% on average.

  • Gender: Women generally pay less for life insurance than men because they have a longer life expectancy.

  • Policy type: Whole life insurance costs more than term life insurance. A policy with a longer term or higher coverage amount will also cost more.

  • Health: Health has a significant impact on your rates. Generally the healthier you are, the lower your rates will be.

  • Hobbies and lifestyle: Hobbies and lifestyle choices that put you at risk of harm, like skydiving or smoking, will raise your rates.

How Many Years Do You Pay For Whole Life Insurance

You can pay for whole life insurance from now until you die and then the death benefit for your policy will be paid out to your beneficiary. Or you could purchase a 10-pay policy and have a permanent death benefit that you pay for in 10 years. Obviously, if you choose the 10-pay option, your annual premium will be a lot more than if you pay from now until you die.

But remember whole life is an extremely versatile product that allows you to pay premiums in different ways. For example, you could use policy to dividends to offset the annual premium. Your dividend may be enough to cover the entire annual premium or it may only partially pay your premium, that will depend on how long youâve had the policy and the amount of your whole life policy dividend.

The right answer for how many years you pay for your whole life is to know how long you want to pay before you start. In helping hundreds of clients design and set up their own whole life policies over three decades, the clients who are the most pleased knew exactly how long they were going to fund the policy before they started. And they followed through on that plan to fund it.

Why does that make a difference? The major reason is that it allows us to design the policy for maximum efficiencyto find the perfect balance between the premium amount, the death benefit they need, and the cash value accumulation they want. Your goal should be to strike the balance there as best as you can for yourself.

What Happens To Whole Life Insurance At Age 100

Many whole life insurance policies are written to expire at age 100. But if you live longer than that, you have a couple of options. For instance, if you are younger than 85, you could do a 1035 exchange into a new policy that lasts until age 121. And if youre in your 90s, you may be able to do a 1035 exchange into a deferred annuity with the cash value of your policy. But before you do anything, you should talk to your financial planner and insurance agent to help you make the best decision.

Other Factors That Influence Life Insurance Premiums

Our whole life insurance premium calculator doesnt account for your personal health history. Your medical history and other risk factors, like smoking, have a major impact on how much you pay for a policy and each insurance company weighs health factors differently.

That means two people with the same age, gender, and ZIP code would get the same estimates from our cost calculator, but receive different final premiums after going through the life insurance application process.

Shopping around and comparing rates from different insurance companies is the best way to ensure youre not overpaying for a policy.

How We Chose The Best Life Insurance Companies

How Much Disability Insurance Do You Need?

In order to compile our list of the best ROP term life insurance companies, we developed a comprehensive life insurance methodology. We started off by researching what consumers want from life insurance companies, and for that, we looked to third-party consumer studies, including J.D. Powers 2021 U.S. Life Insurance New Business Study and the 2021 Insurance Barometer Study, by Life Happens and LIMRA.

With those findings in mind, we gathered more than 50 data points on 91 life insurance companies, including ratings for financial strength, customer satisfaction, and customer complaints, as well as information about years in business, online tools, no-exam options, dividends, maximum issue ages, and available riders.

Our review process gave preference to companies that provide online quotes, no-medical-exam coverage, same-day application decisions, and robust self-service website features. We also considered each companys financial stability and record of customer complaints. Companies received ratings boosts for lengthy available terms, and the ability to convert and renew coverage past the level-premium period. We ranked each company according to the following categories and weights.

  • 20%: Same-day decision, online quotes, online application
  • 20%: Website features
  • 15%: No medical screening required
  • 10%: Financial stability

Mutual of Omaha life insurance offerings stand out for a few reasons. Qualified applicants can get a same-day decision on coverage and skip the medical exam. Additionally, the company includes a terminal illness living benefit on its ROP policies. You can convert your policy to a permanent life insurance policy until the end of the policys term or your 70th birthday, whichever comes first. And you can even renew coverage after the level-term period until age 100 if you want. Thats impressive, given that some companies limit the conversion period to the first 10 years of the policy, and many limit renewability to age 80 or 90. Mutual of Omaha also offers a wide variety of riders on its ROP policies, including a waiver of premium rider, accidental death benefit, and childrens term rider .

No : Calculate Your Life Insurance Needs

The key to determining how much life insurance you need is to understand your financial obligations and your financial resources. You want to buy enough life insurance to cover any financial obligations that your resources wonât be able to cover. You might want more if you want to leave a legacy in addition to providing financial support.

Here are some financial obligations to consider when calculating your life insurance needs:

  • Funeral and burial expenses: The median cost of a funeral with visitation and burial is $7,848, according to the National Funeral Directors Association.
  • Income replacement: Consider how much of your annual salary would need to be replaced and for how many years .
  • Debts you owe: How much would it cost to continue making mortgage payments or pay off the mortgage entirely? Also add in any other large debts that would need to be paid.
  • Child care: Your spouse or partner might need to hire someone to care for or transport young children if youâre not around to help.
  • College tuition: Consider how much you want to contribute toward your childrenâs college education and multiply that amount by the number of kids you have.

Consider the following assets or resources you already have to help cover your obligations:

How Is The Cash Value Of Life Insurance Calculated

Unfortunately, there isnt a simple answer for how to calculate the cash value of a life insurance policy. This is due to the way that cash value is accumulated for different types of policies. In many cases, the sum of premiums paid, the duration the policy has been in effect, and the value of your death benefit define the cash surrender value of a life insurance policy. Your life insurance company may have a cash value life insurance calculator to help you determine how much it is worth.

For example, if youre wondering, What is the cash value of a whole life insurance policy? The best way to calculate a life insurance payout is to consult your insurance company. This is because whole life insurance policies have guaranteed cash value accounts that will grow based on the insurance companys formula. But, more specifically, you might be asking, How do I find the cash value of my life insurance policy? Most insurance companies will have a chart similar to this one:

Policy Year

These charts will clearly show you how much cash value your whole life insurance has accrued.

If you want a growth in cash value, its also possible to receive dividends based on how much money you have. If an insurance company generates more revenue than it needs to operate, they will pay policyholders. However, dividends are not guaranteed and should not be relied upon.
