Often, inshore fishers do not stock food. Instead, they bring meals from home for their crew because the trips are short . You can deduct the cost of these meals as long as the meals were a taxable benefit to your crew.

You can do this if your boat was at sea for 36 hours or more and the meals you provided for your crew were not taxable benefits. The most direct way to claim your health insurance premium costs is to apply them as a deduction to your total gross income. When you take these deductions, the result is called your adjusted gross income, or AGI. Basically, your AGI is your gross income minus allowable adjustments, such as student loan interest or health savings account contributions. In summary:

Gross income – adjustments = AGI

  • Your total tax liability is based on your AGI. If you use the insurance premiums to lower your AGI, you may have a lower tax debt.

You’re Eligible For Insurance Through An Employer

You can’t deduct the costs of health insurance if you or your spouse were eligible to participate in a subsidized group health plan through an employer. Taxpayers are allowed, however, to use any computation method, as long as the sum of the SEHD claimed for the premiums and the PTC computed, taking the SEHD into account, is less than or equal to the enrollment premiums.

Publication 974 implements Rev. Proc. 2014-41 by allowing taxpayers to choose from a simplified calculation method and an iterative calculation method. Although the simplified method is easier to calculate, the iterative method may lead to a more favorable result.

The HCTC expires at the end of 2021. The HCTC can’t be claimed for coverage months beginning in 2022. The advance monthly payment program will continue through December 2021 but will not accept HCTC payments in 2022.

COBRA premium reductions.

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 provided temporary 100% premium subsidies for eligible former employees enrolled in COBRA coverage. If you received a 100% COBRA premium reduction from your former employer or COBRA administrator, dont check any boxes on line 1 for the coverage months for which you received such reduction. You arent eligible to claim the HCTC for those months and may need to repay on line 5 any advance payments of the HCTC made for your benefit for those months.
