What Exclusions Should I Know About

Even the best travel insurance cards have their limitations.

Whether you qualify for trip cancellation insurance, for example, depends on the reason for the cancellation. If its raining in Cancun and you decide not to go even though its perfectly safe to fly, dont count on being reimbursed. The same goes for a businessman who cancels his trip because of a meeting he has to attend.

Also, people with preexisting medical conditions and those participating in certain sports may not qualify for coverage.

What Credit Cards Come With Travel Insurance

How to use Travel Cards?

Remember those pamphlets that arrived in the mail when you received your credit card, the ones you threw in the recycling bin? Likely within that paperwork was a handy Guide to Benefits that detailed the travel insurances of your credit card. Thankfully, most of this information can still be retrieved online when logging into your credit card account or even doing a simple Google search.

In the most general sense, every credit card is unique in its benefitsand that includes travel insurances. Some cards like the Citi Premier® Card, which ranks best in class for extended warranty protection on shopping purchases and is great for earning points on travel, comes with zero travel protections. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Chase Sapphire Reserve® has the most comprehensive suite of travel protections, ranging from Medevac insurance to rental car insurance as primary coverage.

Below is a chart of six popular travel credit cards and the insurances they do and do not provide.

Delta Skymiles Reserve American Express Card

Welcome offer: Earn 50,000 bonus miles and 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles after you spend $5,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first six months of account opening. Based on TPGs valuations, this worth up to $705.

Rewards: 3x on purchases made directly with Delta 1x on all other eligible purchases.

Travel insurance:

Annual fee: $550

The Delta Reserve Amex provides a 3.3% return on purchases made directly with Delta as well as travel protections that can protect you on eligible round-trips. Id personally use the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred or Ink Business Preferred Credit Card instead of the Delta Reserve when buying flights. But the Delta Reserve offers decent travel protections if you dont have any of these Chase-issued cards or want to earn Delta miles.

Why Do You Need Travel Insurance

At this point, you might be wondering whether travel insurance is actually worth it.

As with homeowner and auto insurance, you hope to never need it. But think about it this way: Youre protecting yourself from the worst-case scenario. What if your flight is canceled? What if your bags get lost? What if you get sick or sprain your ankle?

Just because youve never been in a car accident, that doesnt mean you should cancel your auto insurance. So why would you skimp on travel insurance?

If you need further proof, lets look at some of the most common travel insurance benefits and how they might apply in a real-life scenario.

Chase Sapphire Preferred: Best Travel Protections With A Low Annual Fee

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is only a slight step down from the Chase Sapphire Reserve it includes most of the same travel insurance protections, just not to the same extent. But the annual fee on this card is significantly lower at just $95 per year.

Sapphire Preferred card holders get the same trip interruption and cancellation coverage as the Sapphire Reserve up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip if your trip is halted or canceled for a covered reason. Youll be reimbursed for any prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses, such as airfare, tours and hotels. This will even cover you if youre sick just make sure to get a doctors note.

Other travel protections are also comparable between the two cards, but the main difference is that to be eligible for trip delay insurance with the Chase Sapphire Preferred, your flight needs to be delayed at least 12 hours or require an overnight stay and theres no emergency evacuation coverage.

Additionally, the auto rental collision damage insurance on the Chase Sapphire Preferred is primary coverage but will only cover you for up to the actual cash value of the rental car. Conversely, the maximum on the Sapphire Reserve is $75,000, which could potentially cover damage beyond the car itself in the event of an accident.

How To Claim Credit Card Travel Insurance

If you do run into a situation while traveling that you think will be covered by your credit card travel insurance, there are a few things you’ll want to do to get your insurance claim approved.

  • Document: Make sure to document any out-of-pocket expenses and save all of your receipts.
  • File: Once your trip is over and you’re safely back at home, you can start the claim filing process. Log on to your credit card account or talk to the customer service department.
  • While most credit card companies contract with third-party insurance companies to process all travel insurance, they will be able to direct you to the right place to get started. Make sure that you stay organized and pay attention to the details to give your claim the best chance of being approved.

Benefits Of Paying For A Holiday On A Credit Card

Although you wont get full travel insurance with your credit card, paying for a holiday on a credit card gives you protection through Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. This means that if your holiday costs more than £100 and up to £30,000, and you paid either a deposit or the full price on your credit card, you should be able to claim your money back if something goes wrong. Examples include if your airline or holiday company goes under or if the trip isnt as described.

The cost of your flights or holiday must be more than £100 to be covered, but you dont have to have paid more than £100 on the credit card to qualify. Instead, its the cash price of the holiday or flights that matters. Provided your holiday cost more than £100, even if you only paid a deposit of £50 on your credit card and paid the rest in cash or on a debit card, youll still be covered for the full amount.

Do I Need Additional Travel Insurance

Can you rely on credit card travel insurance?

Even with the coverage listed above, some credit cards offering travel insurance benefits may not provide enough insurance for your needs. For example, if you have paid $10,000 for a vacation using your card and trip cancellation is not offered, you may want to purchase additional coverage. Likewise, if you book a very expensive trip but your card only covers $10,000 in trip cancellation coverage, you may want to consider additional coverage.

American Express offers full travel insurance options through AmEx Assurance. This specific benefit is available to all travelers and does not require an American Express card. You can pick and choose the coverage you want, and a quote will be processed based on your age, trip expense and days traveling.

For example, here’s what we found when requesting insurance for a two-day trip that costs $1,000. You can decide what coverage you’d like and see the full cost of your options:

    • The quote we received covered 100% reimbursement for cancellation, then offered different levels for other types of coverage.

    • Medical protection was available for $25,000 to $100,000.

    • Travel accident protection was available for $250,000 to $1,500,000.

    • Baggage protection was available for up to $500 to $2,500.

    • Trip delay coverage was offered for $150 to $1,000 per day, depending on selecting basic, silver, gold or premium options.

When renting a car, be sure to check the specific requirements of your credit card, which may vary by location and type of vehicle.

How To File A Claim With A Credit Card Issuer

Section 75 means that your credit card company is jointly liable with the holiday firm if something goes wrong. If you need to make a claim, its generally best to approach the holiday company first to see if they can help. But if they dont reply, or if you are able to contact them because they have gone into administration, for example, you can go straight to your credit card company.

The process of making a Section 75 claim can vary depending on the provider. In some cases, you can do this through your mobile banking app or by speaking to someone via an online chat service. In other cases, you will need to contact your card provider by phone or by filling in an online form.

When you make your claim, its important to include as much detail as possible as well as any receipts of your purchase. If youve already approached the holiday firm, include any evidence of this if you can. Explain what you would like your credit card provider to do, which will usually be to issue you with a full refund, and keep a record of all communication.

If you cannot resolve the issue with either the holiday or card company, you can contact the Financial Ombudsman Service, which can independently assess the case. You must do this within 6 months of your claim being rejected.

Consider The Value Of The Coverage For Your Travels

While you cant predict the exact cost of every future trip you plan, you generally have an idea of what kind of trips you take and what type of coverage they require. For example, if you love taking road trips in your trusty SUV and rarely rent a car or book a flight for a vacation, then youre less likely to need car rental or baggage delay coverage. But having roadside assistance as a perk may give you much-needed peace of mind when you hit the open road. Look for a credit card that offers coverage in line with the way you travel most often.

How Credit Card Travel Insurance Works

Fortunately for travelers, many credit cards offer some form of travel insurance to cardholders, and some cards cards offer an impressive lineup of travel protections. Credit card travel insurance works a bit differently than a travel insurance policy you purchase, however. As a rule, credit card travel insurance doesnt offer the same level of comprehensive coverage youd get from a purchased policy. You also cant choose what type of coverage you receive.

Most travel credit cards offer some level of coverage for issues like trip cancellation and interruption, trip delays, lost luggage, baggage delays, rental cars and travel accidents.

If youre planning a trip, one easy way to find out what your credit card covers is to call your credit card provider and have them walk you through the benefits. If youre considering buying separate travel insurance, its worth learning what type of coverage your credit card offers before paying for protection you may already have.
