Usaa Life Insurance Recap: What Are The Pros And Cons

Lets go over some of the highlights and drawbacks of USAA life insurance. Weve compiled some advantages and disadvantages of the company. Check them out below.

Comparing USAA Life Insurance Pros & Cons

USAA Life Pros

USAA isnt the first company to exclude one state. However, its one of the few companies that limit business to veterans only.

Veterans With Ptsd Are Being Denied Life Insurance What’s Happening

In March 2017, William Michael Day was denied life insurance because of his PTSD diagnosis. He began asking his friends if they’ve had similar experiences, and he took it upon himself to research the situation to examine the legality and consequences of when veterans like himself are denied life insurance because of PTSD or other diagnoses. The result is a thoughtful exploration of how mental health and insurance intersect, and the real-life consequences of those intersections for veterans and their families.

Yes, some people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder have qualified for term or whole life insurance coverage. Yes, there are plenty of companies out there offering high-risk policies for exorbitant rates. The focus of this piece is on those being denied.

This article should serve as a starting point for an in-depth discussion about how using mental illness as a justification for the denial of a life insurance policy affects lives, the extent of the denial rate, and how companies are able to legally deny veterans, or anyone, with PTSD. My story is anecdotal. So is that of Jennie Fisher, a fellow NYC Veterans Alliance member, who was denied a life insurance policy by USAA. We should all be wary of anecdotal stories masquerading as empirically supported statements about broader social issues however, the denial of one veteran is enough to warrant an inquiry into life insurance practices.

What then allows for a veteran with PTSD to be denied?

Car Insurance For Vets

The first thing we wanted to look at when answering this question was whether or not USAA was actually a champion of service members, veterans and their families. Wed hope so, considering their entire business model is based on serving that exact client base. So we decided to look at how USAA came about and why they focus their efforts on the military community.

USAA stands for the United Services Automobile Association and began in 1922 by 25 US Army officers who were having difficulty finding insurance because they were considered a high-risk group at the time. The officers wanted to create a group that offered mutual self-insurance to its members who had to be an active duty service member in order to apply. This soon included both active duty and veteran service members and the company grew to the Fortune 500 company that it is today. Over the years USAA has continually let in more groups of military and veteran associated groups however one thing remains the same. you must be affiliated with the military in some way to join the club. Usaa Auto Insurance: Discounts And Low Cost Rates

  • Low rates for military members and their eligible family members
  • Great customer service reviews
  • Discounts for keeping car on military base
  • Doesn’t always offer the cheapest rates

Since USAA only offers insurance to people associated with the armed forces, it doesn’t explicitly offer a military discount, but its rates are nevertheless among the best available to military families.

If you plan on storing your car while deployed, USAA is the clear winner. USAA offers discounts of up to 15% if you keep your vehicle on a military base, and reduces your rate by 60% if you are deployed and store your car in a safe location.

If you take advantage of these discounts, you may only have to pay as little as $250 per year, which is cheaper than the alternative of letting your car insurance lapse.

These discounts, in combination with low yearly rates, mean deployed and active service members will likely end up paying the least for car insurance with USAA. You can see this for yourself by examining our sample quotes below:

State
$1,178 $2,615

USAA is 30% cheaper than the average cost of insurance for the insurers we surveyed. It is important to note that while USAA has the cheapest average out of the five states we surveyed, there are states where Geico and State Farm offer the cheapest rates.

USAA car insurance also excels when it comes to customer satisfaction

I personally looked up the reviews under Consumer Affairs and the BBB. They are not a BBB Accredited but the BBB gave them an A+ rating.

They are an average of 80 reviews and complaints altogether. Some positive feedback and some negative.

Just over 1500 customer complaints in the last year that were closed. Out of all of those complaints, 485 in the last 12 months.

You will find this with most companies. Always best no matter which company you use, always read about the company.

Ask tons of questions and if in any doubt, contact us at PinnacleQuote, we will help isolate the best Top A+ rated carriers!

Geico: Good Option For Retired Service Members And Those Not Deployed

  • Discount up to 15% for current and former military members
  • Offers some of the cheapest rates for military members
  • Not as many discounts for military members who are deployed
  • Lower customer service ratings

Geico may ultimately be the cheapest option if you are not deployed or are retired from the military. Geico provides military auto auto insurance rates comparable to USAA’s rates in the states we surveyed.

Overall, Geico is among the most affordable insurance companies in the U.S. Geico offers up to a 15% discount for those who served in the military, regardless of their active status.

When you factor in Geico’s 15% savings for people in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard, it may offer the best rates overall.

You’re eligible for Geico’s military discounts if you are a member of any of the following organizations:

  • Association of the U.S. Army
  • Fleet Reserve Association
  • National Infantry Association

Geico’s biggest shortcoming compared to USAA is its discount for soldiers who are deployed. Both companies reduce your bill when you’re overseas and your car is in storage, but Geico’s discount is substantially smaller: only 25% off your premium.

Also, unlike with USAA, the discount is only available if you are deployed to an “imminent danger pay” area .

The imminent danger pay areas are only a subset of the countries you may be deployed to, so if you are stationed in Japan, which is not an imminent danger area, you won’t be eligible for the discount from Geico.

Usaa Term Life Insurance Lawsuit

Erin Peterson USAA

Recently USAA is under scrutiny. A Colorado Springs Veteran is suing USAA for denying her husbands $1 million dollar life insurance policy. She is in the process of appealing due to the judge dismissing her case.

Erin Peterson and her husband Ted Bobkowski both served in our U.S. Air Force. First and foremost, We thank them both for their service.

Erins husband died unexpectedly at age 52. He did the right thing years prior to make sure his family was taken care of in the event of his death. He passed away from an aortic aneurysm about two years ago.

You dont hear of cases like this often, very rare. Insurance adjusters are trained to look for reasons to deny either coverage and or payout.

Erins attorney thinks this is what happened in this case. When Ted applied for life insurance he answered no to one of the questions.

This question was, have you ever consulted a health care provider for asthma, pneumonia or emphysema?

They will most likely claim that the answer should have been yes. Ted passed away from an aortic aneurysm. Some experts will suggest that it could be linked together.
