What Do Liability Insurance Cover

Workers Compensation Insurance Vs Employers Liability Insurance

What Is Auto Liability Coverage? | Allstate Insurance

Employers liability insurance is included in most workers compensation policies but the two are totally different.

Workers compensation insurance is required in most states if you have employees . If your employee gets sick or injured while performing a job-related duty, workers compensation covers:

  • Ongoing care costs, such as physical therapy

Employers liability insurance covers your legal fees and costs if an injured or sick employee blames you for the injury or illness.

Workers Compensation Employers Liability Insurance
Covers medical bills, lost wages and other expenses for employees who get sick or hurt while on the job Covers lawsuits brought on by sick or injured employees
Kicks in when someone is injured or hurt on the job, regardless of who is at fault Kicks in when a hurt or injured employee takes legal action against you

What Liability Auto Insurance Doesnt Cover

Liability auto insurance wont pay for your own medical bills or repairs to your car its only designed to pay others for the damage you cause behind the wheel.

To cover your own bills, youll need to rely on other types of insurance, such as health insurance for your medical expenses and collision insurance for repairs to your vehicle. If you want more protection, consider buying full coverage car insurance. Full coverage isn’t a specific type of policy, but refers to a combination of coverage types including liability insurance and comprehensive and collision coverage.

Beyond Liability Auto Insurance: Other Coverage Options

If you want more protection, there are other coverage types you can buy. Experts typically recommend full coverage policies as long as the annual cost of full coverage is less than 10% of your cars value. If a vehicle is financed, the lender will usually require the owner to carry full coverage until the loan is paid off.

In addition to auto liability coverage, a full coverage policy typically includes:

  • Collision insurance: Collision coverage pays for damage to your vehicle and other personal property in an accident, regardless of whos at fault.
  • Comprehensive insurance: A comprehensive policy covers damage to your vehicle that isnt related to car accidents, such as from weather, vandalism or fires.
  • Uninsured motorist/underinsured motorist insurance: Required in some states, UM/UIM policies cover costs related to an accident if the at-fault driver lacks adequate insurance coverage.
  • Personal injury protection : PIP offers medical payments coverage and coverage for loss of income resulting from an accident, regardless of who is at fault.

What Is Liability Car Insurance Coverage

Liability insurance coverage refers to an insurance product that protects against claims resulting from injuries and damage to other people or property. Liability insurance policies cover any legal costs and payouts an insured party is responsible for if they are legally liable. Intentional damage and contractual liabilities are usually not covered in liability insurance policies. Unlike other types of insurance, liability insurance policies reimburse third parties, not policyholders.

Liability car insurance is the part of a car insurance policy that provides financial protection for a driver who harms somebody else or their property. The two elements of liability car insurance are bodily injury liability and property damage liability. The bodily injury part of a car insurance policy covers an at-fault driver, so they are not liable for others emergency and ongoing medical expenses, loss of income, or funeral costs. It also helps cover the policyholders legal fees when the accident results in a case.

Liability insurance is often needed for automotive insurance policies, product manufacturers, and anyone who practices medicine or law. In liability insurance, the provisions that are not covered include intentional damage, contractual liabilities, and criminal prosecution. It covers bodily injuries, including medical bills, prescriptions, lost wages, pain, and suffering.

> > SPEAKER: Property damage liability coverage – you might have heard of it but what is it?

Picture this, you’re driving to the store, on the way you accidentally rear-end a stopped car at an intersection. Nobody is injured but the other car is damaged. That’s what property damage liability coverage is for – your coverage provides for a couple of key things:

One, damages to the other person’s car, if you’re responsible for the accident up to your policy limit and two, to your legal defense.

If the owner of the other vehicle sues you, here’s another important thing to keep in mind if you’re found liable for an accident. Your net worth could be at risk. The more assets you have, the more coverage you may want.

For additional liability protection, consider an umbrella policy.

What Is Employers Liability Insurance

Employers liability insurance is a type of business insurance that protects companies from lawsuits that stem from workplace accidents. The policy will pay for your legal fees, including judgments and settlements.

For example, lets say you own a restaurant and your chef sues you after suffering burns due to a fryer. The chef claims your negligence in maintaining the fryer led to the accident. Employers liability insurance will cover your legal costs, even if the chefs claims have no merit.

In most states, employers liability insurance is included as part of workers compensation insurance. But there are four monopolistic states that do not include employers liability insurance as a part of workers comp. In these states, youll need to buy separate employers liability coverage.

Here are the four monopolistic states:

Types Of Auto Coverages

Auto Insurance: What does Liability Insurance Cover? | Liberty Mutual

There are eight basic auto insurance coverages. You can choose whether to buy the others.

  • Liability coverage pays to repair the other drivers car if you caused the accident. It also pays the other drivers and his or her passengers medical bills and some other expenses. Texas law requires you to have at least $30,000 of coverage for injuries per person, up to a total of $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 of coverage for property damage. This is called 30/60/25 coverage.

Think about buying more liability coverage. The minimum liability limits might be too low if you cause a multi-vehicle accident or the other drivers car is totaled. If you dont have enough liability coverage to pay for the damages and injuries you cause, you might have to pay the rest out of your own pocket. The other driver could sue you.

  • Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your car after an accident.
  • Comprehensive coverage pays if your car is stolen or damaged by fire, flood, vandalism or something other than a collision.
  • Medical payments coverage pays your and your passengers medical bills. It also pays if youre hurt while riding in someone elses car or while walking or biking.
  • Personal injury protection coverage is similar to medical payments coverage. It pays your and your passengers medical bills. But it also pays for things like lost wages and other nonmedical costs. All auto policies in Texas include PIP coverage. If you dont want it, you must tell the company in writing.

Why You Should Get General Liability Insurance For Your Florida Business

To understand general liability insurance, just think about all the product recalls where someone was injured or killed while using a companys product. For example, if you create and design a hand cream or lotion and that product burns someones skin or causes a severe rash, you could be held liable. If you design ceiling fans and faulty screws are given with the product that causes a blade to come loose and fly into someones six-thousand dollar TV, you could be held liable for the damages. Without general liability insurance, your company could be forced to pay for these incidents out of your operational budget. For small businesses, just one claim of this nature could put them out of business.

    Who Needs General Liability Insurance

Most companies need this insurance, especially if you rent or own an office or commercial space. Even if that doesn’t apply to you, small businesses that work directly with clients and customers benefit from general liability insurance.

This insurance policy can keep your company financially stable if youre sued by a customer or competitor. Because general liability insurance provides such important coverage, most small business owners buy the policy right after they start their business.

Is Family Liability Protection The Same As Personal Liability

Yes personal liability coverage protects you in case of injury or destruction to someone elses property. Personal liability is usually included as part of your homeowners policy. You might also see it listed as family liability insurance. Generally, both types of policies will cover everyone in your household, but check the fine print to make sure.

    What Is Backdated Liability Coverage

Does General Liability Insurance Cover Me Wherever I Go?

Usually, you must have liability coverage in place when an event happens that results in a claim. Backdated liability insurance, however, is insurance that provides coverage for a claim that occurred before the insurance policy was purchased. These policies are uncommon and usually available only to businesses.

    What Is Comprehensive Insurance

Comprehensive insurance is automobile insurance designed to cover damage to your car from causes other than a collision. Comprehensive insurance offers coverage if your vehicle is destroyed by a tornado, dented by a run-in with a deer, spray-painted by a vandal, damaged by a break-in, or crushed by a collapsing garage, among other casualties. If you finance a vehicle purchase, you may be required to purchase comprehensive coverage and collision coverage.

If you are thinking of buying comprehensive coverage, it may not make sense financially if you drive an older vehicle thats already lost a significant amount of value. In most states, the law requires drivers to have liability insurance, but collision and comprehensive insurance are optional if someone owns a vehicle outright. If a person has financed the car, the auto loan company might require comprehensive insurance. The damages a comprehensive insurance covers include:

    • Natural disasters, including earthquakes, hurricanes, floods
    • Contact with animals, such as hitting a dog
    • Vehicle theft, or theft of particular parts of the vehicle

What Is Not Covered By Liability Insurance

    Who Does Liability Insurance Cover?

Generally, liability insurance helps you pay for expenses relating to an accident that occurred where another person is injured or their property is damaged. Your liability insurance would not cover your personal medical costs or those of a member of your household. It also does not cover damages to your own propertyeven if the damage is caused by another person.

There are a few more instances where your liability insurance would not kick in, including:

    • Punitive damages in a lawsuit
    • Intentional damages, such as purposely injuring a guest

Personal liability offers coverage for a wide variety of situations. Here are a few of the most common claims, as well as a few unexpected claims that would also be covered:

    • Dog bites: According to the Insurance Information Institute, dog bite claims on homeowners insurance policies cost roughly $400 million a year, and they account for over one-third of all home insurance liability claims. Many dog bites are covered, but dog bites from certain breeds may not be covered. Youll want to check your policy to know for sure if dog-related damages are covered.

What Is Excluded From Liability Car Insurance

According to Allstate, auto liability insurance usually doesn’t reimburse you for the cost of repairing your vehicle after an accident. Instead, you need to get collision coverage. Additionally, liability coverage doesn’t cover vehicle damage that results from other events such as hail. Comprehensive coverage protects you against non-collision damage.

Auto liability insurance also doesn’t extend to financial losses associated with your injuries following an at-fault accident. To get this type of coverage, you should consider buying medical payment coverage. You can seek advice from your insurance agent if you want to know more about auto liability coverage or the minimum car insurance requirements in your state.

Do Independent Contractors Need General Liability Insurance

Five Things You Need to Know About Home Insurance Liability Coverage ...

Like any small business owner, independent contractors can be sued and held liable for customer injuries, customer property damage, or advertising injuries.

While contractors who dont have a physical location or expensive equipment probably dont need a business owners policy or commercial property insurance, they will still benefit from general liability insurance.

If you dont want to purchase a commercial general liability policy, you can ask your clients to add you to their policies as an additional insured. This will cover you for as long as you work for the client who insures you.

Keep in mind that your clients might pay a higher insurance premium if they add you to their general liability policies, and your coverage will end once the contract expires.

Limits Whats Covered And Choosing Piper Aircraft Liability Coverage

You may have heard that as of late March 2021, Utah is now requiring a minimum of $100,000 in liability insurance for GA aircraft owners. A lot of people seem to be asking, So what? I thought insurance is required. Why the new law? Well, that is the kicker: Aviation insurance is not like auto insurance it is not required in nearly every state like auto insurance is.

I researched the requirements for the U.S. and the best that I can tell is that only 11 states require proof of insurance or financial responsibility. Minnesota looks to be the only state to require aviation insurance. The rest require proof of financial responsibility . I did find the September 2015 Government Accountability Office report Observations Related to Liability Insurance Requirements and Coverage for Aircraft Owners, which provides a list as of 2015. Of course, that report was before the Utah change.

It appears the new Utah Aviation Liability Insurance Amendments were prompted by a couple of crashes. I dont have all the specifics about the accidents, but the first appears to be an aircraft that crashed on a roadway and hit a car in 2017 with no significant injuries. A lawsuit has been filed by the automobile operator. More recently, a Cherokee Six crashed on takeoff in 2020 and destroyed a house, killing the homeowner, the pilot, and two of the five passengers.
