What States Require Trailer Insurance

Some General Differences In State Driving Laws

Do I need a DOT number to haul my dump trailer in Texas? Questions answered!

In California, the speed limit on freeways is 55 mph for any vehicle towing a trailer and 70 without a trailer.

In New Jersey, if you are pulled over and found to have a firearm that was not purchased IN New Jersey, you are breaking the law.

The speed limit maximum in Texas is 70 mph during the day, and 65 at night. If you dont take notice of this they will ticket you. Its easy to do when leaving a state like Colorado where the speed limit maximum is 75 mph. I was pulled over in Texas one morning for going 72 mph.

New York doesnt allow trailers at all on most parkways.

Some states dont allow right turns on red lights, anywhere. Others allow them as a rule, and with only specific streets restricted.

Most speed laws become immediately apparent because they are usually posted prominently along the highways. But the right turn, towing regulations, propane limitations, and other types of laws are harder to know, because those are in the drivers handbook, but not necessarily posted so that out-of-state drivers would be aware of them.

But these arent the only differences in highway laws that can get you a citation and a fine.

How To Get Rv Insurance

Getting insurance for RVs is not much different than getting car insurance. If youre already insured with a company youre happy with, check with them first and ask them for a quote. Youll need to provide them with the motorhomes basic details, such as make, model, year, vehicle identification number , approximate cost of the contents inside and miles.

You may get cheap RV insurance through your current insurance company because of the discounts youd be eligible for, such as bundled policies and long-time customer. Once you have a quote, gather a few others to find the best and most affordable policy for your needs. The following insurers are just some of the companies that offer RV insurance:

Standard Coverages For Motorhomes And Rvs

Some basic insurance coverages for motorhomes and RVs include:

  • Bodily injury liability, which helps pay for bodily injury damages you may become legally liable for as a result of an accident. This includes paying for an injured party’s medical bills and loss of income, up to your coverage limit.

  • Property damage liability, which helps pay for damages to another persons vehicle or property you, may become legally liable for as a result of an accident.

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorists coverage, which reimburses you for injuries or damages caused by a driver who doesnt have enough or any liability insurance.

  • Medical payments, which helps pay medical expenses for you, your family household members and your passengers due to accidental bodily injury while occupying your RV, no matter who is at fault.

  • Comprehensive, which provides coverage for loss to your RV not caused by collision, such as damage caused by contact with animals, falling objects, vandalism, theft, fire or hail.

  • Collision, which pays for damage to your RV if you hit another vehicle or object, another vehicle hits you, or your RV rolls over.

Does Car Insurance Cover Towing If You Only Have Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive auto insurance isnt required in any state, but you usually need it if you have a car loan or lease. Comprehensive insurance protects your car from damage outside of accidents, including fire, weather, theft, vandalism, and animal contact.

Unfortunately, your comprehensive insurance doesnt automatically cover a trailer youre towing. If something damages your car while you have a trailer attached, your comprehensive insurance will only pay for damage to your vehicle.

Am I Legally Required To Have Trailer Insurance

While some states do require that drivers have insurance for their trailers when towing them, separate from their auto insurance, others do not. Even if your state doesnt have a law regulating trailer insurance, you might cross state lines into one that does. This is a good reason, among others such as the potential to save thousands of dollars in the case that something goes wrong, to purchase trailer insurance.

To understand what kind of insurance coverage you need, you may also need to know what type of travel trailer you have. Insurance companies, campgrounds, and even some recreational vehicle manufacturers may classify travel trailers differently.

Broadly, recreational vehicles fall into three different types. Class A motorhomes are the largest and strongest driveable RVs.

Class B motorhomes are also driven but are much smaller, often the size of a large van, typically without slide-out features.

Class C motorhomes fall between Class A and Class B in size and have overcab extensions that give more living space.

Often included in the Class C designation is any recreational vehicle that is non-motorized. Non-motorized vehicles can also be classified on their own to comprise a fourth type of category: Campers and Trailers.

Because these recreational vehicles are non-motorized, they are designed to be towed behind another vehicle.

Some types of campers and trailers included in this category include the following:

Does Car Insurance Cover Towing If You Only Have Liability Coverage

Liability insurance covers damage you cause to other people in an accident, and their property damage coverage covers any damage done to their property or vehicle. Additionally, your liability insurance covers damage you cause with a trailer youre towing.

Your trailer wont be included in your liability insurance if its unregistered, not street-legal, or using the wrong type of vehicle to tow it. For example, a liability claim will likely be denied if you overload a trailer and try towing it with a small car.

If your insurance denies a liability claim, youll be responsible for paying for all damage you cause. For this reason, you must keep your trailer in good condition and use it correctly.

Most states require liability insurance before you drive or register your car. Getting the minimum car insurance required in your state is your most affordable option for coverage. You can check how much the average minimum insurance policy costs in your state below.

As you can see, minimum insurance rates are very affordable in most states. Some states with higher rates usually require more insurance due to factors like heavy traffic, high theft rates, or extreme weather risks.

When Are Trailers Not Covered By Your Insurance

Although your liability insurance likely covers a trailer youre towing, there are situations when you wont have any coverage at all.

Your insurance will not cover a rented trailer. If you need to rent a trailer, you should spend a little extra money and buy the company’s rental insurance.

A trailer you use for work will also likely not be covered unless you have commercial auto insurance.

No matter what youre hauling, its always a good idea to check with an insurance representative first. Theyll be able to explain what your insurance covers and the companys rules regarding trailers.

California is notorious for being one of the more heavily regulated states, especially when it comes to their automotive and RV regulations.

However, they are actually on the more lenient side when we start comparing Californias insurance laws to the insurance laws of other states.

For example, many states require drivers to have not only liability insurance coverage but also have some form of uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.

Luckily for those California RVers, though, this is not true of the Golden State.

Is Insurance Required On A Travel Trailer In Michigan

As I mentioned at the beginning of this blog post, whether a trailer has only two wheels or more than two wheels will determine whether travel trailer insurance is required under Michigans No-Fault law.

It doesnt matter whether its called a travel trailer, a camping trailer or a trailer coach.

Specifically, if a trailer has more than 2 wheels, then it will be deemed a motor vehicle under Michigans No-Fault law and, thus, the law will require that a valid trailer insurance policy be obtained. 500.3101)

On the other hand, if the travel trailer has only two wheels, then it is not a motor vehicle under No-Fault and a travel trailer insurance policy will not be required.

As you will see below, a trailers status as a motor vehicle under No-Fault also plays an important role in fixing damage after a car accident.

Does Texas Require Rv Insurance

An RV can be the ideal solution when you want to live on the road and tour the country. Specifically to Texas, youll need RV insurance with the below minimum liability coverage:

  • $30,000 in bodily injury per person
  • $60,000 in total bodily injury per accident
  • $25,000 in property damage per accident

While it may be tempting to roll with the lowest level of required insurance to save money, this can prove exponentially costly in an accident. Driving an RV takes care, patience, and attention, with even the smallest accidents leading to expensive repairs for yourself and anyone that you injure or hit. Consequently, it is doubtful that the minimum liability coverage as required by Texas will be adequate to prevent you from having out-of-pocket expenses during an accident.

In addition to liability coverage to help pay for medical bills and legal fees associated with injuring or damaging a third party person or their property, most RV insurances also include comprehensive and collision coverage that helps pay to repair or replace your RV. You may even be required to carry these coverages if you are financing the RV. If you live in your RV full-time, youll want to specify that with your insurance provider as youll likely need additional coverage. Other coverages that you may want to consider include pest damage protection, replacement cost, roadside assistance, and total loss replacement.

Do I Need Trailer Insurance Or Does Auto Insurance Cover Trailers

This post answers the questions, do I need trailer insurance, and does auto insurance cover trailers? See if your car insurance covers trailers.

March 5, 2021 By Billy Jackson

Driving a car, especially a truck and a trailer, is not cheap and when you are calculating your cost of ownership you have to factor in your insurance costs.

Having adequate insurance coverage to protect you and your vehicle in the event of an accident is clearly important. For some folks pulling trailers, protecting yourself from liability for damages to your trailer is also critical.

Obviously, you maintain personal auto insurance to protect the value of your vehicle and to cover you from potential liabilities in the event of an accident. But does this same personal auto insurance coverage protect the trailer you are towing?

When you purchase trailer insurance specifically for your trailers, it covers you for such things as damages to your trailer. But for some, you might not need to purchase trailer insurance because your trailer might be covered by your personal car insurance policy.

In todays article we will answer the questions, do I need trailer insurance, and does auto insurance cover trailers?

For both collision and comprehensive insurance on your trailer, you might be required to buy additional coverage and list your trailer on your insurance policys declaration page.

Keep reading for more information on whether or not your auto insurance policy covers trailers.

Different Types Of Trailers Require Different Coverage

Insurance Requirements for renting Box Trucks with Amazon Relay

The type of insurance coverage you need depends on the type of trailer you own. If you are towing a utility trailer for short trips to haul a car, an ATV, or a boat, you may want extended trailer coverage. On the other hand, you will need separate insurance for a travel trailer.

If you need to tow motor vehicles behind your insurance vehicle then you would need to purchase tow vehicle insurance also referred to as towing insurance or tow truck insurance. This type of policy would cover the towing of motor vehicles.

If your trailer is covered under your personal auto insurance, you need to find out if you need an endorsement in order for the contents of your trailer to be covered under your policy.

Now, if you are using your trailer in your business then youll likely need commercial insurance which would not only cover your trailer but its contents as well.

So Do I Need Trailer Insurance

If youre involved in an accident while youre towing a trailer, your insurance carrier will probably extend liability coverage on your behalf.

In general, when answering the common questions, do I need trailer insurance? and does auto insurance cover trailers? it is always best to check with your insurance carrier for the details on your policy regarding this potential extended coverage.

You need to specify whether or not the owner of the trailer is the same owner on the insurance policy if the trailer is a rental, the type of trailer it is, and the states in which you will be towing the trailer in.

All of these different factors can be treated differently by auto insurance policies and so it is best to confirm your coverage with your auto insurance carrier.

In some cases, depending on if you are renting or own the trailer, the type of trailer you are towing, and where you are towing it you may need to purchase additional trailer coverage on top of your auto insurance policy.

Keep in mind that minimum required liability amounts vary in different states. So, if you are towing across state lines youll want to confirm with your auto insurance carrier that the policy will automatically increase your liability coverage to other states you drive in.

Hopefully, your auto insurance policy has most of you covered for most of your trailer pulling needs.

Driveable Rv Insurance: What Are The Requirements

A driveable RV is more like a motor vehicle and will need RV insurance. Each states insurance requirements are different youll need to check with your local DMV or insurance provider to find out how much insurance youll need. In general, states require RV owners to keep a minimum of liability insurance. If youre at fault in an accident or property loss, liability insurance covers the other partys medical bills, property damages and your legal bills.

The states minimum requirements may not be the best RV insurance for your needs. States dont require any coverage for your motorhome or property. If you go with the minimum liability insurance, any damage or loss to your RV will have to come out of your own pocket.
