Does World Nomads Travel Insurance Cover Covid

Lets get this out of the way first shall we eh?

When COVID-19 first rocked the world in 2020, most travel insurance companies were quick to invoke their cancellation clauses and pull all medical coverage relating to either illness, cancellation or disruption caused by the pesky pandemic. Not ideal if you end up on a ventilator on the other side of the world and need emergency medical care!

These days, most insurance providers are offering some form of COVID coverage included within their policies, but some are more useful than others. Whilst many now cover hospitalisation caused by COVID infections, fewer are offering any kind of cover for disruption or cancellation such as being refused boarding on a flight for displaying symptoms or trip cancellation protection because of a positive test.

Whilst the pandemic has largely subsided, COVID is still able to severely disrupt travel plans. Therefore do consider paying close attention to the finer details of any insurers COVID-19 cover, especially their trip cancellation coverage and emergency medical evacuation.

The details of the World Nomads insurance plan COVID-19 cover vary quite a bit depending on your country of residence. For example, residents of the United States may benefit from trip cancellation coverage, emergency medical expenses, medical evacuation, trip interruption and trip delay cover caused by COVID-19.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Explorer Plan

World Nomads Explorer Travel Insurance is one of our favorites. There are various high-risk activities that are not covered by ordinary travel insurance, as you can see from the list of activities described in the iTI Lite plan.

If the activity you intend to participate in is not listed, investigate if World Nomads Travel Insurance covers it. The following is a list of activities that are covered. The list is updated on a regular basis, so check the World Nomads Trip Insurance website before making a reservation.

Remember, if your activity isnt on the list, youre not covered by World Nomads Travel Protection. Double-check everything! The Explorer Plan from World Nomads has a lot of beneficial aspects.

Its incredibly convenient to have $3,000 in baggage and personal effects coverage. There is a $1,500 restriction for each item, which is too excessive.

Furthermore, the $500 Combined Max Limit applies solely to jewelry, watches, precious metals, and fur. Most travel insurance companies apply this to devices as well, which means that pricey items are only covered to a certain extent. Electronics are not treated in this way under the World Nomads Explorer plan, which allows them the entire $1,500 allowance.

The trip cancellation and interruption limit are set at $10,000, which should be sufficient for most passengers. Most folks will be ok with $100k in medical expenses and $500k in evacuation coverage.

General Guidelines For Coverage Minimums

For Medical Coverage a $100,000 policy is a good place to start. This should at least get you stabilized until you can be shipped home where your primary insurance can kick in.

Medical Evacuation of $300,000 is a good place to start. This will cover you for medical evacuation needs during your trip and to get you back home.

Trip Cancellation coverage will really depend on your specific trip. A quick trip to Europe will likely be different than a month-long safari in Africa. Anywhere from $2,500 to $10,000 is a good place to start.

Trip Delay covers you for things like a forced overnight stay due to flight or weather problems. $500 to cover you for hotel and food is a good place to start.

The best thing for a delayed or cancelled flight is to always have an overnight bag with you. Check out my How To Pack Light tips and liberate yourself from all the stuff.

Baggage and Personal Effects loss. Again this will vary but at a minimum, I would shoot for $500.

This should get you in the ballpark and remember that you might not need all this coverage based on your existing insurance that you already have.

Why I Use World Nomads For Health Needs

World Nomads Travel Insurance Review

I choose this one because it covers activities I love that most other insurance wont cover, and they have paid out claims put forth by friends of mine consistently.

No insurance is perfect. If you want to get reimbursed, your claim has to include all of the necessary paperwork and qualify under the coverage they offer. Im not a fan of any insurance company they all kind of suck and I dont feel health insurance should ever be for profit but I still get insurance for all of the reasons in this post so far.

I free dive, hike at high altitudes, skydive, scuba dive, and more on my trips. World Nomads is my go-to because of both the comprehensiveness and specificity of the coverage. These guys cover so many activities, from unicycling and dog sledding to swimming with whales and running of the bulls. Its also helpful that they clearly state which activities have coverage by each of their two plans, Standard and Explorer. You can use the following tool to look at pricing:

So, for example, say youre planning a trip to Bali to go surfing, sailing, and scuba diving. You would be able to go on the World Nomads website, look at their detailed lists of activities to find your specific ones, and determine if you need to purchase the Standard Plan or the Explorer Plan to make sure that everything youd be doing on your trip has coverage.

For The Typical Trip:

If you like to do pretty normal things like:

then World Nomads Standard Plan should be just fine for you. Nearly any normal activity you would participate in while traveling is covered under this plan, whereas the Explorer Plan comes in handy for the activities that are more the style of living on the edge.

While both the Standard Plan and Explorer Plan cover up to $100,000 in emergency medical and dental costs, the difference lies in the daily cost of the insurance plan you choose, as well as the total dollar amount of coverage youll receive for a number of other situations such as stolen gear or delayed baggage. While the daily cost differs depending on the specifics of your trip, youll pay, on average, 60 to 75% more for the Explorer Plan than you would for the Standard Plan, but if youll be participating in risky activities, your safety is without a doubt worth the extra cost.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Review: How Does It Work

When shopping for a policy, head to the World Nomads website. Head to the Insurance tab then click on Get a Quote. From there, youll be asked to enter your destinations as well as the age and country of residence for each traveler on the policy.

Once you are able to compare different plans, make sure you read the coverage carefully. There are some limitations in coverage depending on where youre from and the country youre planning to visit.

  • Hospital Advancement: For instances when you need to secure admission to a hospital.
  • Personal Accident: For cases when, within 12 months after youre involved in an accident overseas, you end up dying, losing a limb or suffering from some disablement, a percentage of the benefit limit will be paid.
  • For some destinations or nationalities, coverage limit under heading Accidental Death & Dismemberment applies.

Why World Nomads Is Good Travel Insurance

When I first left on my round the world trip in 2008, I looked for outside verification from others to know whats best in the confusing insurance landscape . World Nomads has a lot of credibility in the market. Its also an inclusive travel insurance, meaning it covers a broad range of people . It also includes the adventurous activities common on long-term trips and while backpacking.

For this reason, major tour and travel companies use World Nomads as their default travel insurance. Twelve years ago, I was a backpacker , but over the years I realized it worked for long-term travels of any style.

Money Grabbing Time Wasters

Honestly should be disgusted with yourselves, insurance people..especially YOU guys are the most scammy people on earth. Spent so much money on insurance and for what? You do F ALL about it EVERY TIME. It’s actually pointless getting insured these days, greedy money grabbers 🙂 I also dont know a date of experience because you hadn’t responded to our claims for 4 months.

Insurance claim in September, a decision in December. Not really what you would expect to be honest. A negative outcome after all the waiting and reminding makes one feel a little deflated by the whole company…:(

Which World Nomads Insurance Plan Is Best For Me

Selecting the appropriate plan for your travels involves understanding which coverage youd like on the trip.

  • If you have a premium travel card that offers an adequate amount of trip cancellation / interruption benefits, you may only need to get a standalone emergency health care policy. For example, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express offers $10,000 per trip and $20,000 per year in trip cancellation benefits. Terms apply. Only the Explorer Plan has a comparable level of trip cancellation protection.

  • If you dont have a premium travel credit card, the coverage provided by your card isnt sufficient or you didnt use the card to pay for your trip, then a comprehensive insurance plan like the Standard or Explorer plan might be the best choice.

  • If you dont need adventure sports coverage and your trip costs less than $2,500 , the Standard Plan would be sufficient.

Money Gone Missing And No Insurance Policy

World Nomads Travel Insurance Review

I purchased a travel insurance policy on the 16 th of November. Money were removed from the bank. No email confirmation was sent out. I called and emailed to ask what is going on. I was told my policy cannot be found. Then I was told that my money went towards somebody elses policy. After 10 days I still dont have my money back or my travel insurance. I have no idea how this can happen as I used my computer with my details and then purchased the insurance as I always do. I requested a refund so I can get insurance somewhere else but no success as yet. Very disappointed

Why Is Travel Insurance So Complicated

First of all, everything around insurance is complicated.

It is only in rare cases you can get an insurance and EVERYTHING is covered under all circumstances, whatsoever.

Anyways.

The world of travel insurance is even a bit more complicated, if you will, because it all depends on your nationality. There is different rules for US Citizens, for Spaniards, for Australians, for Africans, well, for everyone actually.

When visiting World Nomads for instance, you have to choose your own country first to see what is covered in your case.

World Nomads And Covid

Whats the BEST travel insurance plan? (SafetyWing VS World Nomads VS PassportCard Nomads)

World Nomads does cover some medical costs when it comes to COVID. Youll need a confirmed diagnosis from a doctor in order to submit a claim.

Heres what they say:

These benefits may include emergency medical, emergency medical evacuation, trip delay and trip interruption coverage if you contract COVID-19 while traveling. You may also be eligible for trip cancellation coverage for pre-paid non-refundable travel expenses such as flights, hotels and excursions

Be sure to read the specifics in your plan, as there are many caveats and exemptions and youll want complete clarity from your provider. Coverage and caveats vary by region so what applies to one person might not apply to another. So read the specifics carefully and call them if you have questions or doubts about what is actually covered.

For US residents, heres what is currently covered for COVID at a glance:

World Nomads is one of the few companies in the world offering COVID-19 coverage.

My World Nomads Experience

For multiple times now, Ive been on trips where I needed to extend my World Nomads travel insurance online and I never had any problems doing so.

So far, for claims, I have done it once when I had a painful ear infection while I was on the last leg of my road trip in New Zealand. After I had it checked at a hospital, they advised me to postpone my flight back home until the infection clears up .

World Nomads covered not only my hotel stay but also my rescheduled flight ticket! The process for accomplishing this was relatively easy after I gave them a call. I basically filled my claims online, provided all the necessary documents plus receipts as well as my bank details and then I got reimbursed!

Emergency Evacuation And Repatriation

EER coverage is for an accidental injury or sickness occurring during the trip that results in your necessary emergency evacuation. For example, if you break your leg way out in the Himalayas and you need a helicopter rescue, you should be covered as long as you made it clear that you would be doing this, and stated the altitude. If you are going trekking in the Himalayas, check with World Nomads to make sure that they are covering you.

An emergency evacuation must be ordered by a physician who certifies that the severity of your accidental injury or sickness warrants your emergency evacuation.

Obviously, you wont be trekking with a doctor, but once emergency personnel arrives they will contact World Nomads on your behalf.
